EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES


Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)
In partnership with Pinellas County School Board (PCSB), this is an after school program for students in grades K-12. Students enrolled receive assistance with homework, FCAT preparation, and are tutored in specific subject areas by certified PCSB teachers. Family Advocacy
Families in our AEP are provided a support person/liaison between the home, school, and after school program. When parent conferences or other educational needs are scheduled, our support person will attend with the parent.


 




 

 

 






Literacy Program

One on one and group tutoring sessions in reading and writing are provided for the youth. Interactive literacy activities between students and adults are provided, in partnership with external tutoring agencies.


Classes ranging from K-5 grades use the Corrective Reading (CR) curriculum - a researched based direct instructional reading program. The students learn vocabulary words, prefixes and suffixes, as well as workbook comprehension.


After -the-Bell (ATB) curriculum is a research based reading program that the teachers are using at their leisure within their classrooms as part of their reading enhancement efforts with the students. Summer Academic Enrichment Program
Summer camp provides assistance to students in Mathematics, Reading, Technology and other academic areas. Students who are below grade level in reading receive specialized reading assistance. Field trips are scheduled on a weekly basis. Read More…..






YOUTH DEVELOPMENT



Technology Program
Computer skills training for peer mentors to teach students how to use the computer, care and maintenance of the system, software applications, use of online school books, etc.


Youth Leadership and Career Club
Youth, ages 9 - 17, participate in career exploration and have the opportunity to develop leadership skills. During the hours and days that school is not in session, they engage in positive activities, network and plan community events. Activities and events are free to attendees. The energetic and positive atmosphere provides an outlet for constructive activities in the community. This program also provides an innovative approach to experiential learning, networking, and skills building - all focused on preparing youth for their future endeavors.


Cultural Arts Program
Through the use of visual and performing arts (Kick into Fit, dance classes, etc.), the youth experience discipline, personal development, increased awareness of their relationship to the social environment, cultural competency and community connectivity.


Boys to Men
Assists young males in developing their skills, abilities and God-given potential; works on developing their confidence, realistic goals, conflicts and difficult choices in a positive manner - teaches them character education, how to make good choices and decisions, and resiliency skills. Girls United
Understands and respects the different developmental pathways and experiences that shape girls' lives; works on developing a positive self-image; allows girls to voice their ideas and opinions in a safe environment; learn to respect themselves and others; understand diversity, cultural heritage and make wise and healthy choices. These girls, ages 9 to 12 years of age, meet once a week.


Book Club
Promotes literacy and learning in a fun environment; provides books on relevant topics of interest to youth; and guided discussions (at various locations) promote critical thinking about their behaviors and choices. This program is for youth, ages 9 - 14.



FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES


Parenting for Change
Weekly parenting classes are scheduled for individuals who are interested, need support, training and information in providing a positive home environment for their children and themselves. Parents/guardians are provided with various constructive ways to manage their children's behaviors and control their own feelings when communicating with each other in a non-threatening atmosphere. Materials are reproduced to supplement lecture.


Family Night Out
Support group which meets monthly to share common concerns, interests, gain knowledge and awareness of various subject matters through presentations and workshops scheduled. Child care is provided and a full course meal is served.




Emergency Assistance
We recognize that families, from time to time, are in need of assistance to provide for the well-being of their families. CAP, through its limited resources will try to support families by assisting with financial needs that affect their ability to maintain a safe and stable home. This assistance is provided to families involved in our Family Support Program.

Other Community Services


  • ACCESS site - Clients can apply for food stamps, Temporary Cash Assistance, Medicaid and Medicare online;


  • VITA site - Free income tax preparation by IRS trained and certified volunteer income tax preparers;


  • CCTV - Services for the visually impaired; a video magnifier is available to assist in reading mail, bills, prescription information and other printed documents;


  • NOVA NET Access - Computer lab is open daily for public access for Nova Net which is an online courseware system able to deliver core area curriculum for those students seeking to recover credits that have been lost. Nova Net is offered during the school day, as well as before or after school;


  • Nova Net courses utilize an online curriculum and assessment system bolstered by assignments and projects assigned by the teacher of record;


  • Sickle Cell office of record - personnel responsible counsels clients and makes referrals to the appropriate agency;


  • DJJ - Department o f Juvenile Justice has a representative on site to meet and counsel with youth who are on probation;


  • Family Engagement and Involvement - includes Parent Meetings, workshops, information sharing, computer literacy, etc.;


  • GED classes for individuals 16 years of age and older who desire a diploma;

  • ONE STOP Meeting - North County social service providers meet to present information on services offered and ways to collaborate to better serve the various communities.
